Trelawny Beach and Fun Resort Hotel.

Main entrance to Trelawny Beach HotelThis hotel was our home for two weeks. The hotel is about 40-45 minutes drive from Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, on the north coast, heading east bound near the town of Falmouth.
This is an All-Inclusive hotel, so there was no need to carry money around. The hotel consisted of five floors of accommodation and the cottages, which are located in the hotel grounds, a very short walk away from the main hotel building. The hotel has mountain and sea views.

We stayed in one of the cottages which comprised of a bedroom with a large bed (which at times all five of us slept in), a bunk bed, a bathroom with shower, a place to hang your clothes, a dressing table,TV, a 240v socket and a telephone (to make calls direct from our room, we had to leave a deposit at the Cashiers desk).

The cottagesEach cottage had its own air conditioning unit which you could control yourself. There is an adjoining door to another cottage, this is kept locked unless you are a big family or party and require two adjoining cottages during your stay.
The rooms were cleaned and the towels changed everyday. The floor throughout the cottage is tiled. Outside the cottages are two sun loungers and a small table. The sun loungers came in handy for drying your towels or clothes on.
The hotel does have a washing machine and dryer but we had to pay to use them, which at the time was two US Dollars per machine and these are located in the main building. But while we were there, washing machine rooms were being built onto the cottages.
We are a family of five(our children were 8 and 3 years old and eighteen months old) we would recommend staying in one of the cottages. If we were not doing anything for a while, our kids play outside the cottage.

The Hotel GroundsThe hotel catered for children. There is a small area in the gardens, which had swings and a climbing frame. Located near the pool is the Children's centre, there they ran daily activity programs for the children.
Everytime our children visited the centre, we had to sign them in and out, and state our whereabouts, just in case we were needed. The centre also had some cots
On our first full day at the hotel, our two eldest children were whisked away to participate in a childrens fashion show on the stage near the pool. The children participating seemed to enjoy it. If we wanted to, we could have purchased the modelled clothes, from the hotel gift shop

The gift shop sold t-shirts, gifts, newspapers, (predominantly American) toothpaste, cigarettes, books, bottles of spirits and some medicines.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is, buffet style and is taken at Almond Terrace, which is set in the open, but part of it is under cover. There is also the Jamaica Inn restuarant which is located on the first floor, but it had to be pre-booked.
At meal times, a selection of fruits, salads, various hot and cold dishes and desserts were available. The hotel did serve up one of Jamaica's favourite dishes, one evening, it was "Manish Water". Basically it is goats head soup, the ingredients are goats head and feet, intestines, green bananas, breadfruit and seasonings. You may be thinking YUCK!, but it is very good and is considered an aphrodisiac on the island.

There were four bars which served locally produced alcoholic drinks, cocktails and soft drinks. The bars were located in the dining area, the piano bar, the pool area co-located with the grill-snack bar and on the beach. The piano bar is know as "Pocomania" and you can have a sing-a-long, there in the evenings.

A view from the hotel beachNear to the Jamaica Inn restuarant, a timetable of activities for the day was posted on a blackboard, e.g. Beach volleyball, Bingo, Pool volleyball, Basketball, Aqua-aerobics.
The hotel has Tennis courts and near the pool area were the Gym, the Shuffleboard court and Basketball court.
Non-motorised and motorised water sports was also available but we think there was an extra charge levied for the use of motorised water sports. We also people taking scuba diving lessons

There is also a small building in the pool area which loaned us beach towels free of charge, to obtain clean towels we had to return the used ones.
Once a week in the evening there was a beach party. At least a hundred people or so participated, including some older children, whilst being watched by other hotel residents. We were split up into teams and played an assortment of games on the beach. It was an evening of fun.

The Hotel can also arrange weddings on its premises at an extra cost. Included in the price is the cake, champagne, bouquets and button holes. Also the bride gets a manicure and pedicure and the groom gets a massage. There is a choice of three venues:- The beach, the gazebo, which is located in the main garden area, and the front garden of the hotel. A photographer and a videographer are available at extra cost.

Evening entertainment is laid on everynight, on stage at the Almond Terrace and sometimes on the stage near the pool. The resident band (who incidentally were very good) played most nights, accompanied sometimes by a guest singer. On one evening we were entertained by a troupe of dancers who performed Jamaican and African dancing. The hotel staff also put on a show.
Everynight there is a Disco for the night owls, it started at 1030pm.

Note:
The hotel has undergone some refurbishment and name change since we were there in March 2000.
The hotel is now known as "Starfish Trelawny".
Looking at the Starfish website, it appears that swimming pool has been redesigned, there is now a childrens playground on the beach, an island and a Japanese restaurant and more.
